MISSION & VISION.
At The American Apitherapy Society, our mission is to educate and advocate for the utilization of bee products in therapy and medicine. We strive to provide accurate information, resources, and training to support the safe and effective use of apitherapy. Our vision is to expand the understanding and adoption of apitherapy practices in healthcare, leading to improved wellness and treatment outcomes for individuals worldwide.
Our History.
The American Apitherapy Society (AAS) emerged in 1989 from a crucial need to revitalize the scientific study of bee therapy in North America. Building upon the foundation laid by the North American Apiotherapy Society (1978), our founders recognized that honeybee products held untapped potential for improving human health and alleviating suffering.
Our Medical Leadership Foundation
From day one, the AAS has been guided by distinguished medical professionals who understood the therapeutic value of apitherapy:
-
Christopher M. Kim, M.D. - Founding President
-
James Belliveau, Ph.D. - Vice President
-
Harold Lenz, D.Sc. - Treasurer and Acting Secretary
-
Bradford Weeks, M.D. - Director at Large
-
Charles Mraz - Pioneer Apitherapist and Director
This medical leadership established our organization's credibility and commitment to evidence-based apitherapy practices.
Our Mission: Healing Through Nature's Pharmacy
The American Apitherapy Society exists to promote and teach "the use of honeybee products to maintain and improve health, and to alleviate pain, suffering, and disability." This mission drives everything we do, from education and research to member support and public advocacy.
Milestones in Our Journey.
Early Growth and Recognition (1989-1994)
Our society achieved rapid growth under strong leadership. By 1993, nearly 600 members had joined from across the United States and internationally. A pivotal moment came when member Pat Wagner shared her remarkable multiple sclerosis recovery through apitherapy on national television, bringing widespread attention to bee venom therapy's potential.
Under President Bradford Weeks, M.D., membership expanded from 40 to over 1,600 members across all 50 states and 40 countries, establishing the AAS as the premier apitherapy organization worldwide.
Scientific Excellence Era (1994-2008)
Theodore Cherbuliez, M.D. led the organization for a transformative decade (1994-2004), elevating our scientific standards and educational programs. Key achievements included:
-
Launch of our flagship Charles Mraz Apitherapy Course (CMAC)
-
Development of comprehensive scientific symposia
-
Publication of Bee Informed newsletter (later Journal of the American Apitherapy Society)
-
Creation of our first professional website
Innovation and Expansion (2005-Present)
Under the leadership of Andrew Kochan, M.D. and Frederique Keller, L.Ac., DOM, we expanded our educational offerings with the Charles Mraz Apitherapy Course and Conference (CMACC), combining basic training with advanced scientific presentations.
Honoring Our Pioneer (Charles Mraz, 1905-1999)
The sudden passing of Charles Mraz in 1999 marked both a profound loss and a renewed commitment to his legacy. The establishment of the Charles and Margaret Mraz Foundation ensures that their pioneering work in apitherapy continues to benefit future generations.
