Apimondia

The American Apitherapy Society is a member of Apimondia, the International Federation of Beekeepers’ Associations.

Apitherapy owes its existence to Apiculture.  Apimondia recognizes Apitherapy as an integral part of its general program.

Apimondia’s structure consists of an Executive Council and seven Standing Commissions, chaired by individuals from different countries. The Commissions are:
•    Beekeeping Economy
•    Bee Biology
•    Pollination and Flora
•    Beekeeping Technology and Quality
•    Apitherapy
•    Beekeeping for Rural Development

AAS is fortunate to have our Board Member and Vice President, Theodore Cherbuliez, MD as Chairman of the Apitherapy Commission.  We thus are kept well informed, not only by our world-wide members, but also by Theo Cherbuliez, of the developments in Apitherapy throughout the world.

Every other year, Apimondia holds a Congress in different parts of the world.  The next Congress will be held in France:

Attendance at these congresses is an exciting event, providing a special opportunity to learn about beekeeping and apitherapy in many countries.  A large exposition is also part of the event, where new beekeeping equipment and products are displayed by representatives from all over the world.  Meeting people face to face allows for a unique exchange of information. The Apimondia congresses are the main meeting points for everybody involved in apicultural practice and science all over the world.

Specific talks on Apitherapy at the Congress take place on different days.  A detailed program will be provided on the Apimondia website later in 2009.

Apimondia also organizes seminars and other events on even years between the Congresses. In 2008, the event, known as Apimedica, was held in Rome, while in 2006 it was held in Greece, where many people from the American Apitherapy Society attended and several members presented.  Glenn Perry and Theo Cherbuliez gave presentation talks and Vetaley Stashenko gave a poster presentation. Other AAS members who attended included Frederique Keller, the current AAS President; Priscilla Coe, the AAS Director of Public Relations; Bruce Brown of CC Pollen; Deanna Herrera, as well as Noah Perry, Glenn’s son.
